Yo La Tengo rolls through my neck of the woods next week in support of their very very nice Fade LP. I’m excited! Incredibly, it’s been close to six years since I last saw YLT — they don’t make it out to Colorado all that often and I think the last time they were here my wife had just given birth to our daughter. Excuses, excuses! Anyway! Today, I’m digging back into ye olde Sunsquashed Archives to bring you this vintage recording of Georgia, Ira and Stephan Wichnewski playing The Cubby Bear in Chicago, IL in the bygone spring of 1988. They almost sound like a totally different band, to be honest — and a pretty ferocious band at that. The New Wave Hot Dogs-heavy set is packed with snarling guitars, snarling vocals and other snarling things. It’s a blast. Stick around ‘til the end for Ira’s solo (but very electric) rendition of the Jackson Browne favorite “Somebody’s Baby.”

I can’t really say that there are many truly memorable things from my years of high school that will stick to me as I head out to college. I usually wonder why my life isn’t as great as I had hoped. People enjoy spending time with others. I spend most of my time alone. Company and social interaction inspires people to become something or someone with somewhere to go with some goal to pursue. I truly feel that encompassing myself in my room for my whole life has led me to be afraid, afraid of taking risks, having friendships, keeping relationships, and most importantly, speaking my mind. I love my parents with all my heart and I appreciate their loving and caring hearts, but the memories won’t start until a simpler life begins.

Simple. Having the ability to see my parents everyday. Having the ability to talk to my parents for at least an hour a day. Having the ability to talk to my parents at least 30 minutes a day. Having the ability to talk to my parents about my opinions, my thoughts, my problems, my daily activities. Having the ability to talk to my parents about anything and everything. Having the ability to tell my parents the truth and still be accepted as their daughter with flaws. Having the ability to gain the courage to tell my parents the truth and not lie in every conversation that occurs. Having the ability to not be afraid of telling the truth. Having any type of ability to start. Having any type of ability to not feel.

This is the next step, really. It’s time to realize that our time here won’t be forever.
